How to properly store your jewelry to avoid tarnish

How to properly store your jewelry to avoid tarnish

There are so many ways to store jewelry. Some put it inside a wooden box. Some hang theirs by the door or toss it inside their drawers. Whatever your style is, it should work for you. But do you know there are other simple and creative ways to do it? Do you know that there is a proper way to store your jewelry and avoid tarnish? Well, here are six easy ways to do it without breaking a sweat.

1.Separate jewelry by the material.

First, do an inventory of your jewelry. Make sure to separate gold, silver, and costume jewelry. It is the easiest way to group it all. Avoid getting them mixed up if you can. This separation helps prevent tarnishing when they interact with one another.

2. Make sure jewelry is clean and dry.

Before any jewelry is stored, make sure that it is clean and dry. Moisture can cause oxidation and will allow the metal to tarnish or degrade much quicker. We recommend removing tarnish from jewelry that will be in storage for more than a week. Also, storing tarnished jewelry with untarnished jewelry can cause both pieces to tarnish faster.

3. Lower humidity levels and maintain a consistent temperature.

High humidity is the main culprit that speeds up the tarnishing process of jewelry. If you live in a humid climate, you might notice that your jewelry tarnishes faster in the summer months. Consider running an air conditioner or dehumidifier in the room that your jewelry is stored. Silica gels help in moisture absorption. Put one in your jewelry box. Dark and cool is the perfect environment for jewelry and accessories.

4.Store delicate jewelry in a dark, dry location.

Jewelry does best when stored in a jewelry box with velvet lining. Velvet helps absorb excess moisture and prevent premature tarnishing. For some large pieces, it might be best to keep them stored separately inside a felt pouch or wrapped in a jewelry polishing cloth to limit exposure to the air.

5. Store baubles you often wear in plain sight.

Costume jewelry is generally safe to keep out in the open, so you can either toss this into a tray or hang loose in some jewelry stand where you can see it if you need it.

However, if you want to store costume jewelry for a more extended period, apply the same rules as you would fine jewelry. If possible, segregate and make sure it doesn’t interact with your fine jewelry to avoid reactions. Make sure to maintain low humidity and consistent temperature.
